Project description

The Strategic Plan for Water Reuse in Lisbon City (PLERAL 2020) proposes the construction of structural infrastructures (pipelines, reservoirs and pumping systems) to take advantage of the treated water originated in the city’s three WWTP (Alcântara, Chelas and Beirolas). The Strategic Plan considers investments of around EUR 16 million over 3 phases of implementation, between 2019 and 2025, serving, among other areas:

  • The riverfront of Lisbon (between Belém and Terreiro do Paço/Alfama), as well as in typical areas of night activities (such as Cais do Sodré, Praça de São Paulo and Bairro Alto).
  • The riverfront of Lisbon (between Belém and Terreiro do Paço/Alfama) as well as in typical areas of night activities (such as Cais do Sodré, Praça de São Paulo and Bairro Alto).
  • The axis Parque Eduardo VII and Avenida da Liberdade, and Almirante Reis.
  • The valley of Chelas/Marvila.
  • The Parque do Tejo in Parque das Nações is currently irrigated with underground water.

Overall, and over a period of about 7 years, the plan dictates the construction of about 55 km of main pipelines, 13 reservoirs and 19 pumping stations, in order to provide the city with a system of water re-use adequate to its needs, ensuring an alternative source of water.
